Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

Preparing for hospice care is something that many families are trying to avoid. Death is a topic that many people do not want to discuss due to superstitions or religious considerations. Most families do not bring this up until each member is utterly stressed. If you or a loved one is suffering from a serious illness, it is time to consider it. Think of the services as insurance variations.

There will always be a need for certain insurance or something like it to be prepared for life s occurrences. Since death is bound to occur, hospice services are of no difference whether you are prepared for it or not. Everyone needs composure or peace of mind during critical times.

Without proper care, a terminally ill person may not have access to necessary pain alleviation. It is not nice to see someone suffering that physical agony may only cause a surviving loved one to feel guilty. Family members may start abusing drugs or alcohol when they see you suffer everyday until you died.

    YouTube Preview Image

Such scenarios can be damaging to you and those around you. Also, unpleasant repercussions may be produced in the future. For instance, some family members are using alcohol to escape from what they are feeling, which could result for them to end up being alcoholic. Add this to the guilt feeling and sorrow you or a loved one may have. The result could be wasting much time and money when you can avoid it.

Hospice care services can benefit you and your loved ones. As a patient, you will be given medical assistance together with round-the-clock supervision and monitoring. You can be sure that you will remain comfortable.

As a loved one, you can be sure that the patient will be taken care of properly. Different hospice services are now providing professional and religious counseling that could be beneficial for the members of the family in addressing worries. Communicating how each member feels can help give emotional relief. Counseling and religious support can also help both the patient and family members better handle stress and emotional issues in the coming days.

Whether you want an in house hospice service or a hospice inn, you can surely find great services from professional and well-trained individuals. Most hospice organizations have their own doctors, nurses, health aides and caregivers. These institutions give family members the opportunity to do regular activities without extra worries.

With professional medical staffs taking care of you or your loved one, you can feel at ease that everything can go out well both emotionally and physically. For those who want to be prepared of everything, hospice services could be a good option.

If you are considering hospice care, either for you or your loved one, you should consult your doctor for mental and physical preparation. Check your insurance company too so there would be one that will pay for hospice services. An insurance company can help you have such coverage and be well-prepared for whatever that can happen in the future.

UK beer, soft drinks delivery drivers vote to strike
  • Friday, August 30, 2013

Workers including drivers for Kuehne and Nagel Drinks Logistics (KNDL) have voted in favour of striking. KNDL, which delivers beer and soft drinks to about 30,000 locations in the UK, was in talks with Unite yesterday to try and resolve the dispute.

The vote is a response to a proposed restructuring in which a number of operations currently performed at the firm’s 29 distribution centres would be relocated to three new ‘super-hubs’. Although no distribution centre closures are currently planned, the union says workers fear future job losses, and are also concerned products will spend more time on the road, spoiling the taste of beer.

A Unite official said “We have tried to engage with the company but they have repeatedly failed to resolve this dispute.” A KDNL spokeswoman said “We are committed to continuing dialogue with Unite in order to reach a resolution before any action is taken.” She also pointed out Unite is yet to decide dates for the strike; Unite has described “one final chance” to resolve the dispute.

A Unite ballot of 970 KNDL employees produced a turnout of 64% of which 85% voted to strike. The distribution centres involved are mostly in England, but sites in Aberdeen, Dundee, Bathgate, and Inverness in Scotland and Swansea in Wales are also affected.

KNDL delivers high-profile brands including Britvic soft drinks and Heineken, Kronenbourg, and Fosters beer. Customers include chains Weatherspoons, Enterprise Inns, and Trust Inns, and airports, cinemas, and leisure centres. Even Premier League football clubs are among KNDL’s delivery rounds.

Blog alliance forms over leaked Downing Street memo

Blog alliance forms over leaked Downing Street memo

    Sunday, June 5, 2005

On May 30, 2005, in a “blogswarm”, a massive blog alliance formed. The swarm was fueled by the leak of a secret British memo known as the “Downing Street memo“. Hundreds of blogs formed into the “Big Brass Alliance“, almost overnight, and the alliance is still growing.

A blogswarm is when a large number of bloggers focus on an issue and spread information on it throughout the blogosphere quickly, causing the blogs to swiftly synchronize, much like a swarm of bees. In this particular blogswarm, titled by its patriots the “Big Brass Blogswarm”, the blogs have aggregated about a central blog: The Big Brass Alliance.

The Big Brass Alliance is a collective of bloggers who support AfterDowningStreet.org. The latest “blogroll” can be see here via PHP or in RSS XML. All the blogs will voluntarily post all correspondence from afterdowningstreet.org on their main page, and in general be coordinated by them. The current goals of the Big Brass Alliance are to:

    • Spread awareness of the memo. (Neither the US nor the UK government are disputing the accuracy of the memo.)
    • Petition mainstream media to report on the contents of the memo as it pertains to the Bush Administration‘s handling of pre-war intelligence, and the controversy surrounding it.
    • Gather 250,000 signatures from citizens for a letter from Congress to the President of the United States, urging him to answer five questions regarding the memo, its contents, and the actions of the Administration.
    • Urge people to personally ask the President a single question regarding the Administration’s handling of pre-war intelligence and the sentence in the leaked memo: “But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy.” (There is a $1,000 reward out for a clear answer.)
    • Urge people to sign a petition in support of a “Resolution of Inquiry” into President Bush’s handling of pre-war intelligence.

Within days of its inception, the Alliance delegated maintenance tasks to dedicated bloggers, created a mailing list and forum for news and coordination, and created a Yahoo group and chat channel for brainstorming.

You can see a trendgraph of the blogswarm here, and a closeup of the trend here. Discussion of impeachment also soared during the blogswarm. References to “blogswarm” in blogs in its inception on May 31 can be see here. The last blogswarm was on March 21, in response to the Terri Schiavo trial, but the one before that was much bigger. That blogswarm was on February 17, and it was fueled by an opinion article in the Wall Street Journal by columnist Peggy Noonan, titled “The Blogs Must Be Crazy“. That blogswarm, however didn’t generate a massive alliance like this one, and it wasn’t focused on a political issue. “Spitbull” has a list of other blogswarms and their “fallout”, that they call a “blogswarming scorecard”.

Newly released script from 1970s would have been used as announcement after nuclear attack in UK

    Saturday, October 4, 2008

A script prepared by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and the Government of the United Kingdom in the 1970s, and released today, shows the text of the radio announcement that would be made in case of a nuclear attack on Britain.

The script was released by The National Archives, and it was discussed during the years from 1973 to 1975, as an act of preparation for a nuclear attack. This increased concern occurred due to the ongoing Cold War.

The script started by saying “This is the Wartime Broadcasting Service. This country has been attacked with nuclear weapons. Communications have been severely disrupted, and the number of casualties and the extent of the damage are not yet known. We shall bring you further information as soon as possible. Meanwhile, stay tuned to this wavelength, stay calm and stay in your own homes.” It emphasised people should not leave their homes: “Remember there is nothing to be gained by trying to get away. By leaving your homes you could be exposing yourselves to greater danger.”

“If you leave, you may find yourself without food, without water, without accommodation and without protection. Radioactive fall-out, which follows a nuclear explosion, is many times more dangerous if you are directly exposed to it in the open. Roofs and walls offer substantial protection. The safest place is indoors.”

The script continued by telling citizens to “make sure gas and other fuel supplies are turned off and that all fires are extinguished,” before telling the listener to “use your water only for essential drinking and cooking purposes.”

“Make your food stocks last: ration your supply, because it may have to last for 14 days or more,” continued the script. “If you live in an area where a fall-out warning has been given, stay in your fall-out room until you are told it is safe to come out.”

The script finishes people by telling people to turn off their radio to conserve energy.

The documents were released under Britain’s Freedom of Information Act, and it also said that all reports should be given out in an authoritative and comforting tone. It also contains letters from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications which describe how the use of a familiar voice will assure listeners that the BBC has not been obliterated.

    Starting A Bounce House Rental Business}

Starting a Bounce House Rental Business

    by

    Anne Ming

Aspiring Entrepreneurs are constantly looking for ways to expand their efforts. However, many of them try to break into markets where there is way too much competition. Out-of-the-box thinking is what has made many entrepreneurs who they are today, and what’s more innovative than renting out bounce houses?

As with any new business, the first step is market research. This will obviously be a local market, so look around the paper and phone book to research competition. Check their prices, what they offer, their location, etc. Remember you are competing against established businesses, so it may be a bit hard to break in. See what you can do better, while still maintaining realistic profit margins. Get a business model started on paper, you will find that having a clear goal will go a long way towards building a successful business.

    YouTube Preview Image

When building your business model, consider equipment. At a minimum, you are going to need at least one bounce house, a trailer to haul it, and a vehicle to tow with. Since you are just starting out, used equipment is fine, as long as it is presentable. Remember in the business world your image is all you have to potential clients. If you purchase a bounce house used, make sure you clean it very well, and look over it for any potential damage. Preventative maintenance goes a long way in this business. After all, you wouldn’t want your bounce house breaking down while someone is paying to rent it.

Next, figure out your cost of operation. If you were going to be doing all the work yourself, after the initial investment in equipment, your cost of operations should be fairly small. Things to include would be fuel, vehicle maintenance, bounce house maintenance, advertising, a dedicated phone line, insurance, and perhaps a website. Pay special attention to your advertising budget, as this is where you should invest the most. People need to know you exist in order to be able to buy from you.

Now that you have everything on paper, organize it so you have a clear idea of what everything costs. You need to decide if you are going to pay everything out of pocket, or take out a loan. If you decide to take out a loan, make sure you re-factor the payments into your cost of operation. The bank you loan from is going to want to see this business model, so be sure to make it presentable. Show them exactly how long you plan to take to pay off the loan they give you, and how.

If you decide to start a bounce house rental business, make sure to protect yourself from legal trouble. Take out insurance, and at a minimum make sure your company is a LLC to protect your own assets. If a child gets hurt on one of your bounce houses, the chances of a lawsuit are fairly high. Make sure you are protected!
